Hot Weather Footwear

Sandals – One of man’s oldest forms of footwear, they are nonetheless a very informal type of footwear and should be worn accordingly.  Coming in a wide variety of styles, they range in their level of casualness based on the extent they show the feet and from what material they are made (leather being dressier than synthetic materials).  Hence a pair of plastic flip flops are laid back pool-wear, leather flip flops could be worn to a beach party, while strapped leather sandals are fine for a casual summer get-together with good friends. Keep your toenails clipped and clean when out and about in sandals. Wearing socks with one’s sandals is almost universally considered a faux pas and rather defeats the purpose of wearing sandals in the first place.

Hot Weather Clothing; Jeans and Hats

Denim Jeans & Heat
Blue jeans are not my first choice when it comes to lower body wear on a day exceeding 90 degrees.  Although normally made from cotton, their extremely tight weave and treated fabric inhibit much of the positive attributes of the fabric and with no vents they can trap in heat and cause excessive sweating.  The only exception would be very lightweight denim that has been washed extensively.

Hot Weather Clothing; Shorts

Shorts are casual-wear, period.  No matter how you dress them up they are not in the same league as trousers made from a similar fabric.  Outside the US they are not universally accepted as appropriate for wear in public; many still view them as children’s wear or suitable only when worn for sport.  Looking to make a strong first impression? Think twice about wearing shorts.  That being said, shorts are not going anywhere and are accepted as casual weekend and active wear throughout the US.

Summer Shirt Styles for Man

The T-shirt
The T-shirt is as casual as it gets.  With its underwear origins (and for many still its only domain) the T-shirt is in this author’s opinion appropriate for working out, beach wear, and situations where a close fitting garment that is unlikely to get tangled is called for.  However in the US, a quality designer T-shirt is accepted as casual summer wear; you won’t get a second look if you choose to wear one to class, to the local cafĂ©, or out to a bar with friends.
When wearing a T-shirt, ensure the fabric is 100% cotton and that it is not so thin as to be see-through.  Pay attention to proper fit in the torso area – too loose of a shirt only makes you look smaller than you are while too tight of a shirt makes you look like an overstuffed sausage.

Hot Weather Dressing Tips for man

These three words sum up how a sharp dressed man clothes himself during the summer months.

Clean – A gentleman is showered, well-groomed, and his clothing is free from stains.  He realizes that although he may perspire, he does not have to smell nor look like he stepped out of a sauna.  If you need to shower twice a day, then do so.  Use antiperspirant deodorant, and consider soaps with menthol that will help cool your body.  A sharp dressed man never wears stained clothing, even if he believes others won’t notice.  His hair is washed and its ends cut regularly, with excess hair on the back of the neck trimmed.  Invest in a pair of nose hair clippers (which can be used on the ears as well), opt for a close shave, and treat your skin to lotions that improve health and appearance.  Need more guidance here?  Visit Tyler Sims at ForeMan; his website’s grooming guide is full of great info that answers dozens of questions.

New York Fashion Digital Highlights

Google Glass, the futuristic, augmented reality-enhanced eyewear device the tech giant is developing, made its first appearance at Diane von Furstenberg's S/S 2013 show.
Photos were taken with the device backstage and shared to DVF's Google+ Page ahead of and during the show. A short film compiled from video taken with glasses worn by models, Furstenberg and members of her team was released three days afterward.
Tweets about the DVF show were up 160% from last season, making her the third most-talked about designer on Twitter during Fashion Week, according to third-party data from Whispr Group.

Rebecca Minkoff closed her show with the Stelle Jungle Green Audio Clutch, which cross-functions as a wireless stereo that can be controlled by any bluetooth-enabled device, like your iPhone, within 33 feet. It will go on sale this spring.
HTC also debuted a smartphone designed in collaboration with Cushine et Ochs, which will not go on sale.

Carlos Campos, Christian Cota, Timo Weiland and Suzanne Rae
partnered with voting design platform CutOnYourBias in the month leading up to Fashion Week. Designers submitted sketches of a range of men’s and women’s garments, and fans were invited to vote for their favorites.
Those that received the most votes in each category were then produced and shown in their respective collections. The winners looks were announced on cutonyourbias.com and through Instagram as they came down the runway.

Fashion discovery platform Lyst and Teen Vogue beauty director Eva Chen hosted backstage Google Hangouts on startup Lyst’s Google+ page before Rebecca Minkoff’s and Tibi's shows at Lincoln Center. Those invited into the Hangout were able to pose questions to the designers.
The video and audio quality was poor, but it was a nice use of the medium.

Oscar de la Renta and Marc Jacobs offered twists on the standard video livestream for their shows.
Oscar de la Renta's livestream began two hours before the show. Users could view four cameras simultaneously to watch the action in hair and makeup, on the runway, in the PR office and at the venue entrance.
Marc Jacobs's show was hosted by fashion blogger and humorist Leandra Medine of The Man Repeller, and also included pre-show content.

Dresing Tips

Getting Dressed
  • To survivors: The general rule is to use your unaffected arm to dress the affected side first. To undress, take the garment off the unaffected side, then remove it from the affected side.
  • To caregivers: When you are helping someone dress, always tell them what you are doing first so you don’t startle them.
  • Return to your normal daily dressing routines as soon as you can.
  • Loose-fitting clothes and silky fabrics are easier to slip in and out of than polyester or flannel.
  • Lay out your clothes before dressing.
  • Dress while sitting. It is easiest.
  • When dressing, use your strong arm to dress your weak side first.
  • When undressing, pull your strong arm or leg out of your clothes first.

Tips on Dressing Taller

1. Monochromatic Color Themes
Along the same lines as minimizing visual clutter, removing contrasting color from your appearance helps streamline the way you look. Keeping all your clothes within a fairly consistent color theme, especially a dark one, will create an illusion of height. Different color shades are fine–just try to keep it loosely monochrome.
When you do wear different colors or different shades of the same color, try to weight the darker colors toward the bottom half of your body. That way people’s attention starts down near your feet and travels upward. Dark trousers with a lighter shirt create a lengthening effect; a darker shirt with lighter pants shortens your appearance.

Fashion’s Night Out: Your Digital Guide

Fashion’s Night Out is returning to cities and stores across the globe for its fourth year on Thursday.
The event was established in 2009 by Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour and CFDA president and designer Diane von Furstenberg as a way to bring shoppers into stores without resorting to traditional discount tactics. To achieve that end, many retailers organize parties, celebrity appearances and sweepstakes, and offer limited-edition merchandise at their flagship stores. Many also encourage customers to join in the festivities via their desktops and mobile phones for greater engagement and marketing reach.

Deciphering the Invitation Dress

A man’s life is full of moments that will require him to dress a certain way. From his high school graduation to walking his daughter down the aisle, a man needs to understand the basics of formal, semi-formal, and casual dressing so that he knows when to wear what and how. Because a gentleman understands his clothing is not just about him; his personal presentation is a reflection of the respect he shows to those around him.

Religious Services and Funeral Dress

church1

Religious Services
Whether you are attending as a believer or as a guest, a man who visits a place of worship or religious importance should always show respect, if not for himself, then for others and their beliefs. He does this by following the unstated dress code and never dressing below it. Because no church is the same, and no temple has the exact requirements as another, this varies not only from religion to religion but also from country to country. A safe guide is to always wear clothing that covers the body, is respectful in nature, and that is culturally acceptable. Think business casual to semi-formal wear.

Receptions and Parties Dress

There are get-togethers, there are cocktail parties, and then there are receptions. In that order do we generally see these congregations increase in their level of formality; however, it’s not uncommon to attend a casual reception or a more formal get-together. Again, like most things, its situation dependent.

Get-togethers are typically more relaxed and comfortable social events, often loosely planned where most of the attendants know each other already or share a common bond. The dress code here ranges from casual to business casual. Cocktail parties on the other hand are planned events where many of the guests do not know each other; hence we have a higher level of formality as people feel each other out. Judgments are passed, business deals started, and business cards are liberally distributed here. Expect the dress code to be business casual to black tie optional.

Finally, we have receptions. Although they can be very informal events, many times they are not, as the event’s purpose is to “receive” a new couple, a new company president, or a new child. For this, we show respect by elevating our appearance. Expect semiformal to black tie optional.

First Week on the Job Dress

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, and during your first week at a new job you’ll be making a lot of first impressions. So it’s important that you pay very close attention to the unstated dress code and carefully adapt your clothing to it. Now don’t give up your individuality, but be sensitive to what others are wearing and the reactions your clothing will draw. Because even though the interview is over, the game of office politics and perception has just begun.

First Date Dress

There are a lot of things you can’t control on the first date; whether or not she’ll like the restaurant, what she’ll think of your opinions, and if she laughs at any of your jokes. But one thing you can control is your appearance, and it’s to your advantage to make the most out of what you have.

Graduations Dress (Man)

Many graduates think the event surrounding the culmination of their education is about them. I know I did. It wasn’t until I had children of my own that I realize a graduation is really a family celebration, a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by others so that one can achieve a common goal. With this in mind, you should dress smartly not for yourself but in respect to those who went without so you wouldn’t have to.

Dressing for Weddings (Man)

A male wedding guest should seek to contribute to the happiness and love being celebrated. His attire should be smart and within the requested boundaries of the host, and if he chooses to be fashionable, it should be limited to his accessories. Remember that you are not there to attract attention to yourself but rather to help frame an important event in the history of two families.

As to what to wear, most wedding invitations clearly state what the dress code will be. Expect it to fall between black tie and business casual, although 95% of the time if you show up in a dark suit, white shirt, and muted tie with proper dress shoes you’ll be perfectly dressed. If the invitation does not cover what guests should wear, there are a number of clues you can pay attention to that will help you figure out the expected attire:

How to Dress Sharps for Young Men

It’s important to note that it is worth paying some attention to your clothing as a young man even if you’re working in a field without strict dress codes.  Crisp, clean, and well fitted clothing – wherever you are at in the world – encourages  others to take you more seriously.

Racism in the Modeling Industry

For this week’s topic, we’re tackling a major issue in the fashion industry and our culture in general… racism. It would be impossible to cover such a widespread issue with just one article. Therefore, we will be featuring a multi-part series on racism in the fashion and beauty industries.
